Windows 11 Mouse Stutter in Games: How to Install the KB5127648 Fix and What to Check Next (Oct 2026)

Microsoft's 13 Oct KB5127648 release notes confirm a fix for mouse input stutter in some games. Install it, verify build .9711, then check polling rate, VRR, docks and USB drivers.

TL;DR: In its 13 Oct 2026 release notes for KB5127648, Microsoft says the update "fixes an issue that could cause mouse input to stutter in some games." So if your mouse has been stuttering in games, the cause may be a Windows bug and not your hardware. Install KB5127648, check that your build number ends in .9711, and only then start troubleshooting polling rate, G-SYNC/VRR, docks and USB drivers.

What Microsoft confirmed

The KB5127648 release notes (13 Oct 2026, October Patch Tuesday) list this line under [Gaming]: "This update fixes an issue that could cause mouse input to stutter in some games."

Microsoft does not say what caused the bug, which games were affected, or how many users saw it. Windows Latest, which first reported the entry on 14 Oct, says the fix was not in the 22 Sep optional preview, so this is the first time it has shipped. Windows Latest also links the fix to user reports on Microsoft Q&A and Reddit, including Final Fantasy XIV, Star Wars: The Old Republic and The Division 2. But Microsoft hasn't confirmed that any of those reports come from this bug.

Affected versions and target builds

According to Microsoft's release notes, KB5127648 brings these versions to the following builds:

Windows 11 version Build after KB5127648
26H2 26300.9711
25H2 26200.9711
24H2 26100.9711

Windows Latest and NerdsMagazine also report that this is the last regular update for Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro.

Step 1: Install the fix

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Click Check for updates.
  3. Install the 2026-10 cumulative update (KB5127648).
  4. Restart your PC.

If Windows Update keeps failing, you can download the standalone package for your version from the Microsoft Update Catalog and install it by hand.

Step 2: Check your build number

  • Press Win + R, type winver and press Enter. Or go to Settings > System > About.
  • The OS build should be 26100.9711, 26200.9711 or 26300.9711, or a later build.
  • You can also check Settings > Windows Update > Update history, where KB5127648 should be listed as installed.

Step 3: If the stutter continues

Microsoft's note only covers some games. Mouse stutter can still have other causes. Windows Latest lists outdated mouse, USB or GPU drivers, G-SYNC/Adaptive Sync, wireless interference, very high polling rates and docks as possible causes. Test one change at a time:

  • Polling rate: In your mouse software, drop from 4,000/8,000 Hz to 1,000 Hz and test again. Very high polling rates put more load on the CPU in some games.
  • G-SYNC / VRR: Turn G-SYNC or FreeSync off temporarily in the NVIDIA or AMD control panel, and turn off Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Variable refresh rate in Windows. If the stutter goes away, turn the features back on one by one.
  • Docks and USB hubs: Plug the mouse, or its wireless receiver, directly into a USB port on the PC, ideally on the rear motherboard I/O. Windows Latest cites a user whose mouse only stuttered when connected through a Kensington dock.
  • Wireless interference: Move the receiver closer with an extension cable, away from USB 3.x ports and Wi-Fi routers.
  • USB and mouse drivers: In Device Manager, check Universal Serial Bus controllers and Mice and other pointing devices for warning icons. Update chipset and USB drivers from your motherboard or PC maker, and update mouse firmware with the vendor's software.
  • GPU driver: Install the latest driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel.
  • Clean boot: Microsoft's clean boot guide shows how to rule out background software such as overlays and RGB utilities.

What we don't know yet

Microsoft hasn't explained the technical cause or named the affected games. If you still have stutter on build .9711 or later, it may have another cause. You can report it through Feedback Hub (Win + F).
