GPT-6 Astra on ChatGPT Plus: why it's in Work and Codex, not Chat

ChatGPT Plus includes GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex, not GPT-6 Pro in ordinary Chat. OpenAI's usage table, five-hour estimates, banked resets, and what credits will not unlock.

TL;DR — If you pay for ChatGPT Plus and still cannot pick GPT-6 Astra in the ordinary Chat window, that is often expected—not a broken account. OpenAI’s Help Center says Plus includes Astra in Work and Codex, while GPT-6 Pro in Chat (Astra-powered) is listed for eligible Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans. Work and Codex share a metered allowance (Plus Astra roughly 5–45 estimated local messages per five-hour window, not a hard cap). Launch-week banked resets (3–4 Sep) and a 7 Sep automatic refresh are documented; credits do not buy early model access.

OpenAI’s 3 September launch copy said Astra would roll out to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise “over the coming days.” Many Plus users opened Chat, saw GPT-5.6 Sol at the top, and assumed rollout had skipped them. The product surface changed. The model did not always land where people looked first.

Chat vs Work vs Codex

ChatGPT is no longer one picker.

  • Chat — everyday conversation. On Plus, the top frontier option in Chat remains in the GPT-5.6 family for many accounts; OpenAI’s usage article states Plus does not include GPT-6 Pro in Chat.
  • Work — longer agent-style jobs (research, analysis, finished docs, spreadsheets, presentations). This is where Plus is told to find GPT-6 Astra.
  • Codex — software-development surface / CLI. Same shared Work+Codex allowance as Work.

Notebookcheck’s 7 September walkthrough matches the Help Center: desktop app → top-left product menu → toggle Chat → Work; Codex is a separate entry. Mobile puts Work in the top dropdown. OpenAI also tells people to update the desktop app (sometimes twice) and restart; Codex CLI needs a recent build (press cited ≥0.153.0).

What Plus actually gets (numbers)

OpenAI’s “Managing usage with GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex” page publishes an estimated local-message table per five-hour period. Actual burn depends on task size, reasoning effort, Fast mode, and tools. Where both a five-hour and a weekly window apply, you need headroom in both.

Model (Work/Codex) Plus (est. / 5h) Pro 5x Pro 20x
GPT-6 Astra 5–45 25–225 100–900
GPT-5.6 Sol 10–100 50–500 200–2,000
GPT-5.6 Terra 25–200 125–1,000 500–4,000
GPT-5.6 Luna 250–2,000 1,250–10,000 5,000–40,000

Help Center tip that saves quota: Astra at Low/Medium reasoning can beat Sol at High for some tasks—raise effort only after a clear miss, not by default.

Chat GPT-6 Pro (Astra-powered) has separate message limits on eligible Pro/Business/Enterprise plans. Notebookcheck cites about 50/week on Pro $100 and 200/week on Pro $200 for that Chat route—plan cards move; check Pricing / Settings → Usage.

Resets, apologies, and what still will not help

Launch was bumpy. Secondary reporting quotes Sam Altman calling the rollout “messy” around 4 September. OpenAI’s own Help Center documents compensation mechanics more carefully than timelines:

  • 3 Sep and 4 Sep 2026: eligible existing Plus/Pro/Business subscribers in good standing received a banked reset each day (Business Standard/Premium seats included; new-account cutoffs were evening PT).
  • 7 Sep 2026: an automatic reset refreshed eligible limits; it did not add another saved reset.
  • Banked resets live under Settings → Usage until used or expired. An automatic reset will not show as “1 reset available.”
  • Credits pay for eligible extra usage. They do not unlock a model your plan/surface lacks, and buying credits does not buy early access during rollout.
  • Daily reset offers covered the broader launch delay; individual “my account still missing Astra in Chat” cases do not mint extra resets as a courtesy.

If Astra is missing entirely from Work after updates, confirm account/workspace, then Support with timestamps—not a third-party “Astra unlock” EXE.

How this differs from our other Astra posts

This page is the Plus UX problem: wrong surface, shared meter, reset vocabulary.

FAQ

I am on Plus. Where do I click?

Desktop: open ChatGPT → switch the top surface from Chat to Work (or open Codex). Mobile: use the top dropdown for Work. Then check the model picker and Settings → Usage.

Why does Chat still show Sol?

Because Plus Astra access is documented for Work/Codex, not as GPT-6 Pro in Chat. Sol remaining on Chat is consistent with that split.

Is Astra in Work the same as GPT-6 Pro in Chat?

Same model family powering the name, different product surface and limit buckets. Help Center says access in Work does not automatically mean GPT-6 Pro in Chat.
