Borderless Gaming DLSS 5: Neural Rendering Without Swapping Game DLLs

How-to: enable unofficial DLSS 5 Neural Rendering via Borderless Gaming’s BGFX effect (no game DLL edits). Steps, vs Swapper/OptiScaler, risks, Steam/GitHub-only sources.

TL;DR — Want a DLSS 5–style Neural Rendering look without replacing game DLLs? Buy/update Borderless Gaming on Steam, install the separate bgfx-dlss5-nr effect from GitHub inside the app, pick the DLSS5-NR preset, and enable Scaling (GPU) on Windows. This is a community/post-process pathway, not NVIDIA’s official RTX 50 in-engine DLSS 5. Prefer single-player; expect a real FPS hit.

If you already know DLSS 5 Swapper, Manager, or OptiScaler, this post is the other lane: compositor-level BGFX effects that leave the game install alone.

What problem this solves vs DLL injection / swap

Most community DLSS 5 experiments (Swapper, Manager, RenoDX/ReShade feeders) back up and replace NVIDIA DLLs or inject add-ons into the game folder. That works for many titles, but it means:

  • Touched game files (restore required after patches)
  • Higher anti-cheat / integrity-check exposure
  • Per-game install clutter and “which DLL is live?” confusion

Borderless Gaming’s DLSS5-NR path is different. Per the developer and coverage from VideoCardz and TechRadar:

Concern Borderless Gaming + bgfx-dlss5-nr Typical DLL Swapper / ReShade route
Game folder Unmodified DLLs / injectors written into the install
How NR runs Quantized model through BGFX (app’s GPU effect pipeline) NVIDIA DLSSNR runtime + ReShade/RenoDX-style injection
Install surface Steam app + optional GitHub effect URL Separate GitHub tool(s) per workflow
Undo Disable/remove effect in Borderless Gaming Restore originals in Swapper/Manager
Fidelity vs native External post-process — not engine motion-vector NR Closer to leaked/official runtime path when it works

Hard caveat: NVIDIA’s official DLSS 5 Neural Rendering is integrated in the game pipeline (rendered frame + motion vectors, etc.) and has been positioned around RTX 50 first, with RTX 40 work described as later. Borderless Gaming’s effect is an unofficial, quantized BGFX shader popularizing a similar look. Do not treat screenshots as “true DLSS 5 enabled in this title.”

The Neural Rendering package is not bundled inside the Steam update by default. You must install the effect yourself; until then it uses no resources (Wccftech summary).

Requirements

Item Notes
Borderless Gaming Paid Steam utility (app 388080). Update to a build that supports Install from GitHub effects / redesigned effects editor (late Sep 2026 changelog territory).
Effect repo Official effect: andrewmd5/bgfx-dlss5-nr (releases / paste repo URL in-app). TechRadar noted DLSS5-NR ~v0.2.1 at coverage time — check Releases for the current tag.
GPU Developer pitch: quantized path aimed at more than RTX 50; ~30 FPS target cited on RTX 3090 depending on game/settings. Expect heavy cost on weaker cards.
OS / API Windows: use Scaling (GPU) when enabling. BGFX also appears in Steam Deck / Vulkan contexts for other effects — follow in-app capability errors if your hardware lacks a required feature.
Drivers Experimental shader tech; developer notes future gains as Shader Model 6.10 driver support matures. Keep GPU drivers current, but don’t chase unsigned “DLSS 5 driver packs” from random sites.
Game mode Borderless / window capture workflow (that’s what Borderless Gaming is for). Exclusive fullscreen quirks vary by title — use the app’s borderless / BGFX / proxy tools as needed.

Step-by-step: enable DLSS5-NR without touching game DLLs

Follow the official README install:

  1. Buy / install / update Borderless Gaming on Steam only. Skip SEO mirror “crack / free DLSS 5” downloads.
  2. Launch Borderless Gaming. Open the effects editor (or the presets screen in Holo, if you use that UI).
  3. Choose Install from GitHub and paste exactly:
    https://github.com/andrewmd5/bgfx-dlss5-nr
  4. Select the DLSS5-NR preset and enable effects.
  5. On Windows, set scaling to Scaling (GPU).
  6. Add your game to Borderless Gaming’s list (borderless window as usual), apply the preset, and launch.
  7. Tune the exposed knobs: strength, lighting, structure, style, processing resolution. README sample defaults include Strength 1 · Local tone 1.5 · Structure 2 · Natural · Resolution 950 — start conservative, then raise resolution/strength only if FPS allows.
  8. To stop: disable the effect / preset in Borderless Gaming. No game-folder restore is required for this path.

That’s the whole loop: Steam app + GitHub effect URL. No nvngx_*.dll hunting, no ReShade add-on install for this specific route.

Comparison: when to use Borderless vs Swapper vs OptiScaler

Use this as a pick-one matrix (you can still keep tools installed separately — just don’t stack conflicting injectors on the same competitive online title).

Borderless Gaming + bgfx-dlss5-nr DLSS 5 Swapper / Manager OptiScaler (Pre-SR / DLSSNR routes)
Modifies game files? No Yes (DLL / injector deploy + backup) Usually yes (into game / wrapper path)
Best when… You want a reversible exterior look, hate touching installs, or Swapper restore already burned you You want the community runtime/DLL experiment with overlay toggles You need upscaler / FG / Pre-SR stack control beyond a Steam overlay effect
Avoid when… You need engine-accurate NR (motion vectors), or BGFX capture fails on the title Online / anti-cheat titles; dual-tool installs Same anti-cheat rule; complex API mismatches
Undo Toggle effect off Restore originals in-app Remove wrapper / restore per OptiScaler docs
Cost model Paid Steam app + free GitHub effect Free GitHub tools Free GitHub project

ReShade / RenoDX (as in older MakeUseOf Swapper writeups) sits with the injector column: powerful, but it is still file/injection territory — not the Borderless “leave the folder alone” pitch.

Risks, caveats, troubleshooting

Mandatory caveats

  1. Not official NVIDIA DLSS 5 for every game. RTX 50 native support ≠ this BGFX effect. Community pathway only.
  2. Malware / fake sites. Get Borderless Gaming from Steam. Get the effect from andrewmd5/bgfx-dlss5-nr only. Treat random “DLSS 5 Borderless free download” pages as hostile.
  3. Anti-cheat / ToS. Overlay capture and GPU post-process tools can still trip some online protections or violate publisher rules. Prefer single-player / offline. See also online games / anti-cheat notes.
  4. Steam review noise. Recent reviews spiked after the DLSS 5 headline; some call the look “slop.” The effect is opt-in and separate from the base app — don’t confuse review rage with a forced always-on filter (TechRadar).
  5. Performance. Heavy. Developer ballpark ~30 FPS on RTX 3090 under load; lower processing resolution if you stutter.
  6. Visual quality. Post-process NR can look stylized or inconsistent versus in-engine Neural Rendering. Treat it as an experiment.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Try
No DLSS5-NR in the list Confirm GitHub install URL; update Borderless Gaming; re-open effects editor
“Hardware features not supported” App now surfaces clearer errors — lower SM/feature demand, update drivers, or skip this effect on that GPU
Effect on but looks wrong / tiny FPS Drop processing resolution and strength; disable other stacked BGFX effects
Game won’t capture / black frame Switch borderless window; try BGFX/proxy options documented in the Steam app; some exclusive fullscreen titles fight capture
Crashes adding effects Late-Sep changelog called out crash fixes when adding effects to presets — update the Steam build
Want “real” DLL NR back Use Swapper/Manager on a different single-player title — don’t mix both pathways blindly on one online game
